Our Story

In the summer of 2016, at the age of 14, our founder went on a trip to Kenya to visit Happy Life Children’s Home. On one of the days during her visit, she was asked to assist with the 3rd-grade class at Happy Life. One of the most memorable conversations she had in the class was with the children about what they enjoyed doing. A majority of the kids spoke of a love for enjoying music, singing, and dancing.

Inspired by the kids love of the arts and as a dancer, Sophia taught a short ballet class to the children. She was floored by their attention and a strong desire to learn the routines. When she got home she told her mother all about her new idea of teaching ballet classes in Kenya and possibly opening a performing arts school. Now, Ngoma Kenya has a team in the United States and Kenya and works towards supplying children in Kenya with the arts and so much more.

About Our Programs

arts in kenya

What originally started with simple ballet classes taught by just our founder, now has grown into music lessons, painting classes, and more. Over the past two years, we have seen the children in our classes make tremendous strides in not just their art, but other aspects of life.

Covid 19 Response

In March of 2020, as our arts programs went on pause we worked to supply families in Kenya who were out of jobs because of the pandemic.

Each family received enough food for their household to last them for 6-8 weeks. Soon we hope to continue this program through our community center opening in 2024

Stand By Her

We partner with “Stand By Her” run by our project manager. This initiative was created to assist girls who are being sexually exploited during the pandemic because their families cannot afford basic hygiene items. We held a day of empowerment with them, and each girl received enough sanitary napkins to last her into 2021.

Ngoma Fellows

Stay tuned as we are working towards a new program of Ngoma Kenya launching in 2024.

Stand By Her

On the International Day of The Girl in 2020 (October 11th), we created “Stand By Her,” run by our project manager. This initiative was designed to assist girls sexually exploited during the pandemic because their families could not afford essential hygiene items. We held a day of empowerment with them, and each girl received enough sanitary napkins to last her into the following year. This program repeated throughout the week of October 11th, 2020, and continues to this day every month. Since our first Stand By Her in 2020, we have reached nearly 4,000 girls and given out over 100,000 pads.

Arts Classes

What originally started with simple ballet classes taught by just our founder has now grown into music lessons, painting classes, and more. We partner with children’s homes, schools, churches, and rescue centers to offer these free classes every day of the week. Over the past six years, we have seen the children in our classes make tremendous strides in their art, but other aspects of their life.
